What Are BHB Salts? Benefits, Side Effects and How to Take BHB Capsules

BHB shows up on the label of almost every keto supplement, from powders to gummies to keto BHB capsules. But what is BHB, what are BHB salts, and what can they realistically do? This guide explains it in plain English, with links to the research.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your healthcare provider before starting any supplement.
What is BHB?
BHB stands for beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-hydroxybutyrate). It's one of the three ketone bodies your liver makes from fat when carbohydrates are low, such as during fasting or a ketogenic diet. Your body can use ketones as an energy source alongside glucose.
The BHB your body makes is called endogenous. BHB you take in a supplement is called exogenous, meaning it comes from outside the body.
What are BHB salts?
On its own, BHB is an acid. To make it stable and easy to put in a capsule or gummy, manufacturers bind it to a mineral. That's a BHB salt. You'll see them on labels as:
- Sodium beta-hydroxybutyrate
- Calcium beta-hydroxybutyrate
- Magnesium beta-hydroxybutyrate
- Sometimes potassium beta-hydroxybutyrate
Because each salt carries a mineral, BHB supplements also add a little sodium, calcium or magnesium to your day. On the Shape Burner Capsules label, a two-capsule serving lists 68 mg sodium, 20 mg calcium and 12 mg magnesium from BHB, plus 26 mg potassium from potassium chloride.
BHB salts vs ketone esters
There are two main types of exogenous ketone supplements:
| BHB salts | Ketone esters | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | BHB bound to a mineral | BHB bound to an alcohol molecule |
| Formats | Capsules, gummies, powders | Mostly drinks |
| Effect on blood BHB | Smaller rise | Larger rise |
| Taste | Mild in capsules; salty in powders | Very bitter |
| Cost | Lower | Much higher |
In a study at the University of Oxford, a ketone ester drink raised blood D-BHB to about 2.8 mM, while a ketone salt drink raised it to about 1.0 mM, and both returned to baseline within 3 to 4 hours (Stubbs et al., 2017). The same research noted that many salt products contain a mix of two forms of BHB, D and L, and the body handles them differently.
What does research say about BHB supplements?
Here's what's fairly well established:
- BHB supplements raise blood ketone levels temporarily, for a few hours, even if you aren't following a ketogenic diet.
- The rise is short-lived. Levels return to normal within hours, so a supplement isn't the same as being in nutritional ketosis.
Research on other effects, such as appetite, exercise performance or mental focus, is still early, with small studies and mixed results. Be skeptical of any product that promises dramatic changes. It's also worth knowing that research studies often use several grams of BHB per dose, while most capsules contain far less. Our capsules carry a 700 mg ketogenic blend per two-capsule serving, so think of them as part of a daily routine rather than a lab-strength dose.
BHB salts side effects
BHB salts are generally well tolerated at label servings, but some people notice:
- Stomach upset or loose stools, more likely with large doses or on an empty stomach
- Extra minerals, which matters if you're watching sodium for blood pressure or kidney health
- Interactions with other ingredients. Many keto pills also include ingredients like 7-keto DHEA, which is hormone-related. Read our plain-English ingredient guide to see what each one is.
Talk to your healthcare provider before using BHB supplements if you're pregnant or nursing, under 18, have diabetes, kidney, liver or heart conditions, or take any medication.
How to take keto BHB capsules
- Follow the label. For Shape Burner Capsules that's two capsules a day with a full glass of water. Don't exceed the serving.
- Take them with a meal if you have a sensitive stomach. Many people pair them with breakfast.
- Morning or before bed? There's no single right time, but most people take keto capsules earlier in the day. Pick a time you'll remember and keep it consistent.
- Stay hydrated, especially if you're also eating low-carb.
- Keep the routine going. One bottle is a 30-day supply; 3 and 4-bottle packs cost less per bottle and ship free in the US.
Capsules or gummies?
Both Shape Burner formats include BHB salts and MCT oil. The capsules have a larger 700 mg blend with AAKG and 7-keto DHEA and no flavor. The gummies add apple cider vinegar in a cherry flavor. Compare them on our capsules vs gummies page, or read ACV gummies vs liquid apple cider vinegar.
FAQ
What is BHB good for?
BHB is a natural ketone body your body uses for energy. As a supplement, it temporarily raises blood ketone levels. Research on further effects is still early.
Do BHB salts put you in ketosis?
They raise blood ketones for a few hours, but that's not the same as nutritional ketosis from a low-carb diet, where your body makes ketones itself over time.
Are BHB salts safe?
At label servings they're generally well tolerated by healthy adults. Check with your healthcare provider first, especially if you watch your sodium intake or have a medical condition.
What's the difference between BHB salts and esters?
Salts bind BHB to a mineral and are used in capsules and gummies. Esters bind it to an alcohol molecule, raise blood ketones more, taste very bitter and cost much more.
